Background of the study
Church sermons in Nigeria are not only religious discourses but also rich sites of linguistic interaction. In these sermons, speakers often draw on the syntactic structures of indigenous languages such as Igbo and Yoruba, blending them with formal religious rhetoric. This study investigates how traditional syntactic patterns influence sermon delivery, examining aspects such as clause ordering, sentence structure, and the use of parallelism that reflect indigenous linguistic heritage (Obi, 2023). The integration of Igbo and Yoruba syntactic elements in sermons helps to establish cultural resonance and connect with diverse congregations. Through qualitative analyses of recorded sermons and textual transcriptions, the research seeks to identify recurring syntactic features and assess their impact on message clarity and audience engagement (Chinwe, 2024; Afolabi, 2025). The study aims to reveal how these traditional structures are maintained or adapted in the formal setting of church sermons, providing insights into the broader dynamics of language contact and cultural preservation.
Statement of the problem
Despite the evident influence of indigenous languages in Nigerian church sermons, research on the specific syntactic structures influenced by Igbo and Yoruba is scarce. The lack of systematic analysis obscures how these traditional syntactic patterns affect sermon clarity and audience engagement (Obi, 2023). This gap in understanding may result in missed opportunities to harness linguistic heritage for more impactful religious communication. The study addresses this gap by examining how indigenous syntactic influences are integrated into sermons and their role in shaping the delivery of religious messages (Chinwe, 2024). Findings from this research could guide improvements in sermon composition and foster cultural continuity (Afolabi, 2025).
Objectives of the study:
1. To identify syntactic structures influenced by Igbo and Yoruba in church sermons.
2. To analyze their impact on message delivery and audience understanding.
3. To recommend strategies for preserving traditional syntactic features in religious discourse.
Research questions:
1. What indigenous syntactic patterns are evident in church sermons?
2. How do these patterns influence communication and comprehension?
3. What measures can help maintain these traditional structures?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it bridges linguistic analysis and religious communication by exploring the syntactic influences of Igbo and Yoruba in church sermons. The findings will assist religious leaders and linguists in understanding how traditional language structures can enhance message delivery and cultural preservation (Afolabi, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to examining syntactic structures in Nigerian church sermons influenced by Igbo and Yoruba. It does not extend to other religious settings or languages.
Definitions of terms:
1. Syntactic Structures: The rules governing sentence formation and word order.
2. Church Sermons: Religious discourses delivered in church settings.
3. Language Contact: The interaction between different linguistic systems.
